NPCs

How the server's NPCs fight, the monument residents, the road patrols, the trader bots and the nakeds.

On this server, your only enemies are NPCs, animals, the Patrol Helicopter, the Bradley APC and nature. They’ve been reworked so fights stay interesting, without attacking you at home as long as you don’t provoke them from your base.

No counters. No message will tell you how many enemies are left, how many waves are coming, or whether it’s over. Keep your eyes open.

How they fight

Scientists are more lifelike than in vanilla:

  • They move while fighting: they sidestep, close in or back off.
  • They chase you outside monuments: in vanilla, a scientist who leaves his monument gives up and just stands there.
  • They run for cover when you hit them, even outside a monument.
  • They spot you from farther away.
  • Snipers (Bolt Action Rifle, L96) are much less accurate and deal far less damage.
  • All their weapons have a real firing range.

On top of that, ambush enemies each have their own skill level: a few aces, lots of average shooters and a few duds.

At home, you are safe

In a base where you’re authorized on the Tool Cupboard, no human NPC, no Bradley and no Patrol Helicopter can target you or hurt you, whatever event it comes from.

There’s only one exception: if you provoke them from home. When someone in your group shoots at an NPC, the Bradley or the helicopter (or throws a grenade at it) from a base where they’re authorized, that one can fire back at your group at your base for a while. A shot fired from outside never counts: nothing can follow you home.

Ambushes, nakeds, patrols and bots never appear near a base.

Monument residents

Most monuments have their own residents: hostile NPCs with a name, an outfit and a weapon that fit the place, including a few snipers who never leave their post. They come back a while after dying, never right in front of you. The armor they wear can never be looted.

Road patrols

Scientist patrols walk the main paved roads on foot. They shoot on sight and come back some time after being wiped out.

Bots: traders and prowlers

A few named bots live on the map like players: they chop wood, break rocks, pick plants, loot barrels along the roads, hunt and visit monuments.

Friendly bots have their name in blue, visible through walls. They can’t be hurt, and they sell what they’ve gathered for scrap:

  • Bob, lumberjack and miner: wood, stone, ores, plants. Peaceful: he runs away if you bother him.
  • John, barrel looter: components, scrap, plants. He visits monuments.
  • Alfred, hunter: meat, leather, fat, bones.

To trade, press E while looking at a bot, or type /trade (also /troc) next to it. The bot stops and faces you during the trade. It only sells what it’s carrying at that moment, and the trade window shows its prices. Buying to recycle earns you nothing.

Not every bot is friendly: a bot without a blue name attacks you as soon as it sees you. That one can be killed, and its body carries whatever it has looted.

Nakeds

Just like on a real server: when you wander around on foot far from home, “fresh spawns” armed with a rock sometimes rush at you in a zigzag, with player names.

The Patrol Helicopter and the Bradley

  • They only go after players who hit them recently. You can walk right past them without getting lit up, even armed and well geared.
  • At home, they only target you if your group shot at them from the base (see At home, you are safe).
  • Their crates and debris go to the group that led the fight.
  • When a Bradley (not part of a convoy) is destroyed, reinforcements rush in to take back its crates. See Events.
  • Nothing protects your vehicles from their fire.

NPC bodies

An NPC’s loot goes to the group that led the fight, and stays theirs for a good while. A body stays dressed as long as there’s something left on it: at a glance, you can tell which ones haven’t been looted yet. The clothes themselves can never be picked up.
